Leather on willow – there’s no greater sound…
When the bowler is at the top of his mark, you’re nervous, as is he – is he going to bowl another long-hop, or maybe a full-bunger?
To play or to leave? That is the question us batsmen are faced with in England each summer. And when you’ve decided to play it – the next question posed by the bowler, is forward to back?
Will a new bat really help improve your average from last season’s 12.44?
Anyway – none of the above really matters right now – all we’re thinking about is how good the middle is and if we can hit the ball further next summer…
There’s no one size fits all when it comes to getting a bat. Much depends on your preferred weight, pick up, willow grade and amount of grains…
We’ve done our best to take a look at three bats worth checking out ahead of the new season.
Three Bears Cricket Bat from Bear Cricket: RRP – £315
These bats are made using the finest grade English willow including a mid-low sweet spot and ‘sweeping spine’. If you are a batsmen who enjoys front foot strokeplay, look no further, say the brand.
For each senior cricket bat sold in this range £40 will be donated to the foundation to show their commitment to helping the cause.
The Three Bears Foundation is currently being set up in memory of Jane Burn. This Foundation wants to raise awareness and funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Their goal is to raise £50,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK (PCUK) in 2018.
Kookaburra surge pro: RRP – £389.00
All of Kookaburra’s cricket bats are made by hand in the UK as well as in India and this one in particular uses Grade One English willow. This blade contains a low sweet spot with a unique shaping to the toe improving the quality of the pick up.
The mid to low blade bow, the shape of the blade and sweet spot will assist when in the middle.
Renowned for its large sweet spot and edges the Kookaburra Surge combines power with excellent pick-up.
Gray Nicholls Pro Performance bat: RRP – £400
This classic, traditionally shaped bat has an extended sweet spot with a recognisable bow.
The Pro Performance comes with a 1″ Shorter Blade for faster bat speed and a lighter pick-up, as preferred by many professional players in the shorter format of the game.
The bat also contains a mid-blade middle – ideal for both front and back foot play. Another interesting feature of this bat is that it boasts a semi-oval handle for comfort and complete control.
